Sometimes you have to be high-maintenance in order to be low maintenance…

Big hat, big glasses. Everything shaded = Instant low-maintenance!

When I told my Mum I was starting this blog, she asked me what it was going to be called. “The Low Maintenance Lass!” I announced smugly.

“Darling,” she said, trying to be tactful, “Would you reeeeally say you’re low-maintenance?”

She clearly knows me too well.

To people like my beloved Mum, there is no way I appear low-maintenance. I’m always getting my eyelashes tinted, or off for a sneaky massage, or trawling eBay for the elusive perfect wrap dress.

But to the rest of the world, the people who know me less well, I think I appear pretty low-maintenance. I don’t go around with layers of makeup every day, it takes me 15 minutes to get ready in the morning, and I certainly don’t have an endless wardrobe of new and fabulous clothes.

We’d all love to be that low-maintenance girl who doesn’t have to think about it. The one who rolls out of bed looking fabulous; who can just dab on some lip gloss, run a brush through her hair and be good to go. Unfortunately, that kind of effortless beauty does not come naturally to most of us.

I live by the motto that you have to be high-maintenance to be low-maintenance. Use the right hair treatments and you can achieve a great brush-and-go style. Invest in proper skin care, maintain your brows and lashes and suddenly you can get away with just a dab of BB cream and some lip balm in the morning! Put time and effort into exercising and eating right, and even inexpensive clothes somehow hang better. Take the time to learn what suits your face and figure and put together a thoughtful capsule wardrobe, and you really can roll out of bed, throw on some clothes and look chic and put-together.

I don’t always get it right, but I try to apply this “high-maintenance for low-maintenance” approach to every aspect of my life. Another way to put it is that I make an effort up front so that things will be easier in the long run. I apply this to everything: beauty, health, fitness and my obsession with travel.

This blog is where I chronicle my fun-and-frustration, trial-and-error approach to living a gorgeous, low-maintenance life.
